1         Background

11:56 am, Saturday

25th April 2015:

It was like any other weekend for all Nepalese people. However, just 26 second later at 11:56:26 am, everything changed for forever! The earthquake with magnitude of 7.8 with violence intensity struck Nepal killing more than 8856 people to date, injuring more than 22309 people, and making millions of people homeless within that period of few seconds!

1.1       Our Response

To some extent, people from our village Jhumlawang, surrounding villages in Rukum, and mid-western part of Nepal, were lucky as devastating earthquake of that day, and aftershocks thereafter, didn’t cause any serious harm to any living beings, and also didn’t damage buildings and other infrastructures as much as it did in other parts of the country.

As our community and nearby surrounding villages were luckily escaped from devastating earthquake of that faithful day, and hundreds of other aftershocks on later dates, our community based organisation- Jhumlawang Village Foundation (JVF-NEPAL) – jvf-nepal.org, decided to mobilise its Kathmandu based members to collaborate and work with national,  international volunteers, organisations and communities to provide primary health care for survivors of earthquakes in remote villages of highly affected districts.

1.2       Preparation

Preparation for medical team mobilisation started on arrival of our foundation’s International Coordinator, USA/ Canada Coordinator and Media Coordinator in Kathmandu on 28th of April, 2015. First of all, we had to identify most affected remote villages, where no other medical teams had been deployed before. Then, after going through all legal procedure, obtaining authorisation from the Ministry of Health and Population, collaborating with trekking companies for coordinating with national and international volunteers, our partners abroad, and finally launching online crowd funding campaign for this mission: www.gofundme.com/medmobilisation , we were ready.

1.3       On the Ground

The first medial team with rescue volunteers (firemen) from AAIP & APPUI, France was dispatched on 2nd of May for Simjung, Gorkha. Then, 3 more medical teams were mobilized in Dolakha, Kavrepalanchok and Dhading district until 25th May 2015.

Dr Pierre Fouillant for Gorkha, Dr Anupam Ghimire for Dolakha, Dr Manik Lama for Kavrepalanchok, and Dr Namrata Bhatta for Dhading led these medical teams.

In 5 health camps of 4 mostly affected districts, our team of 30 medical professionals with 24 logistic volunteers, we provided medical treatment and counselling for 1362 patients. During evening and early morning, doctors and nurses reached out to those patients in their homes, walking hours in few cases, who could not come to the site due to their frail health condition.

Our Pharmacists and Health Assistants dispensed and counselled about medicines as per prescription and provided information regarding course, dosage and side effects. We provided two box of first aid kits for security personnel (Mobile Team of Nepal Army), two boxes of medical supplies to Thami community, and three big boxes to the Gauri Shankar Hospital in Charikot, Dolakha.  Our medical team handed over 10 boxes of medicines and few rescue equipments ( from our French Firemen) to the Sub-Health Post Centre in Simjung, Gorkha so that community members of that village could get free medicines while stock last.

In collaboration with Karma Flights Medical Team based in Dhoreni, Gorkha, we were able to arrange a helicopter to airlift 4 patients from Gorkha to send them better equipped hospital in Pokhara for their emergency operations. Our medical team referred 7 serious cases to hospitals in Kathmandu of which 3 of them were supported financially for their travel and accommodation cost. One of the referral patients 1 year old Nabya Siwakoti will be coming to Kathmandu from Dolakha with her mother within next month. We will bear the cost of their travelling and accommodation during her operation.

While our medical teams were busy on treating injured, distressed, and chronic patients and counselling them and their family members, logistic volunteers of the team were doing their best to assist our medical team and also offer any support they could offer to those people of communities in need of. They offered their hands to build temporary shelter, rescued a pregnant buffalo, which was confined in very narrow space for 11 days under completely flattened house in Simjung, Gorkha. After rescuing her, the team also made a tarpaulin shelter to protect her from elements.

2         Team Work & Collaboration

It would not have been possible to offer what we had, and could at those critical times to these earthquake survivors of one of the biggest and destructive natural disasters in Nepal’s history, without these amazing and selfless medics and volunteers who put themselves in a risk countless times during these operations on the ground.

Similarly, without willingness of joining hands to provide us logistics for our team on the ground by Kathmandu based trekking companies, it would have been very difficult for us to operate in those very uncertain times and unsafe places.

Likewise, without you, generous and kind people from across the world who donated money generously, organised fund raising events, and offered us your solidarity in these very difficult time, we would not have been able to buy medicines for survivors, provide foods and transportations to our medics and volunteers.
